Youth Programs |
Our Youth Programs, held on site and with community partners throughout the year, engage local kids and teens in the many elements of ‘bike life’. Whether they like working with their hands and tools, riding singletrack, or earning volunteer hours, we want to get more youth on bicycles or in the shop, and make sure they have fun while they’re at it!
Riding: A variety of seasonal bike camps, held primarily between March and October, teach essential bike handling and road safety skills for youth throughout the greater Iowa City metro area. We also engage youth in local cycling events, such as introductory bikepacking trips, races, and community group rides, as able. |
UpShift: Teens in grades 6-12 interested in immersing themselves more heavily in the Bike Library or in the local cycling scene can track hours in our UpShift youth volunteer program. They perform many of the same volunteer tasks we ask of adult Bike Librarians and pass their growing knowledge on to new and younger participants in our youth programs. UpShift teens can use their earned hours toward bike upgrades/customization and as Silver Cord hours in high school. |
